Missile Hits Container Ship in Gulf of Oman near Pakistan: Report

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said on Tuesday it received a report of an incident involving a container ship and military forces in the Gulf of Oman.
After the vessel type changed from tanker to container ship, a missile struck a container ship off the coast of Pakistan on Tuesday.
The Panamanian-flagged Vela Nova may have been hit by a missile while travelling in the Gulf of Oman, around 71 nautical miles off the coast of Pakistan, according to maritime security.
The British Maritime Risk Management Group, according to Reuters, also stated that the ship was thot to have been struck while passing through the area.
The Arabian Sea and the Strait of Hormuz are connected by the Gulf of Oman, which is located off the southwest coast of Pakistan. The strategically significant waterway is close to Gwadar and other important Pakistani ports.
Maritime security sources said the container ship is believed to have been hit by a missile off the coast of Pakistan.
According to initial assessments, the Panama-flagged container ship Vela Nova was believed to have been hit by a missile when sailing through the Gulf of Oman on Tuesday, some 71 nautical miles off Pakistan’s coast, British maritime risk management group Vanguard and a maritime security source said separately.

The agency did not reveal the vessel’s identity, its flag, information about the military force involved, or what caused the incident.
It stated that an investigation is in progress and that authorities are aware of the incident. It also advised ships operating in the region to exercise caution due to the constantly changing security landscape. (With Reuters Inputs)
