Katsina United Defender Chinedu Ozor Reportedly Shows Signs of Movement After Death Pronouncement

Hope has emerged for Katsina United defender Chinedu Ozor after reports claimed the footballer showed signs of movement at a mortuary hours after he was pronounced dead following a medical emergency.
Ozor collapsed during a pre-season friendly between Katsina United and Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina on Tuesday. He was taken to hospital for treatment and was later reported to have died.

According to grassroots sports journalist Prince CJ, Ozor reportedly showed signs of movement while at the mortuary. The report, shared in a video on Facebook, claimed that his hand moved, prompting those present to raise the alarm.
Ozor was subsequently reportedly taken back to hospital for further medical attention.
His former club, Heartland FC, also shared an update claiming that the defender had been moved from the mortuary to a hospital after reportedly showing signs of movement.
“Reliable sources say Chinedu Ozor has been moved from the mortuary to the hospital after reportedly showing signs of movement. He is currently on oxygen as medics work to revive him,” the club stated.
Heartland appealed for prayers for the footballer as medical personnel continued efforts to revive him.
The reports came hours after Katsina United announced Ozor’s death following the medical emergency during the friendly against Niger Tornadoes.
“We mourn the tragic passing of our newly signed player, Ozoh Chinedu, following a medical emergency during today’s friendly match against Niger Tornadoes FC,” the club had stated.
“Our thoughts, prayers, and strength are with his family and loved ones. Rest on Warrior.”
Katsina United did not initially disclose details of the medical emergency, and the club had not issued a detailed medical statement clarifying the conflicting reports about Ozor’s condition as of Tuesday night.
Rivers United was among the clubs that earlier expressed condolences following the initial report of his death. In a statement signed by its General Manager, Okey Kpalukwu, the club sympathised with Ozor’s family, Katsina United and the wider Nigerian football community.
Ozor recently joined Katsina United as the club strengthened its squad ahead of the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season.

The defender previously played for Heartland and Kano Pillars. Transfer records indicate that he moved from Heartland to Kano Pillars in July 2025 before subsequently joining Katsina United.
He was part of the Kano Pillars squad during the 2025/26 NPFL season and featured in the club’s league encounter against Niger Tornadoes in March.
