FERMA Begins One-Month Maintenance of Zuba-Abaji-Kogi Border Road

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has commenced a one-month routine and preventive maintenance exercise on the Zuba-Abaji-Kogi State border road in the Federal Capital Territory.

The maintenance exercise is part of FERMA’s nationwide road maintenance programme and was approved by the agency’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. (Dr.) Chukwuemeka Agbasi, FNSE, FNIHTE, FNICE.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, the Federal Roads Maintenance Engineer for the FCT, Engr. Martin Chidozie Eze, urged the 50 participants engaged for the exercise to demonstrate professionalism, commitment and dedication throughout the one-month programme.

Working tools, safety kits and reflective jackets were distributed to the participants at the end of the ceremony to support effective and safe execution of the maintenance works.

According to FERMA, the programme is aimed at improving road infrastructure while promoting corporate social responsibility and creating employment opportunities for residents along the corridor.

The agency said the exercise would also improve visibility along the highway, reduce road accidents and contribute to efforts to tackle insecurity on federal roads.

The agency also said the maintenance would help minimise the impact of torrential rainfall on federal roads through regular maintenance and improved drainage.

Why FERMA Selected the Zuba-Abaji-Kogi Road

FERMA described the Zuba-Abaji-Kogi State border road as a strategically important transportation corridor linking Northern Nigeria with the southern part of the country.

The route facilitates the movement of people, goods and services across different regions, making regular maintenance essential for safe and efficient transportation.

Scope of the Maintenance

The maintenance works include:

Desilting of the carriageway and hydraulic structures

Vegetation control

Evacuation of refuse and abandoned vehicles

Construction of earth drains

Filling and repair of potholes

FERMA expects the intervention to improve road safety and visibility for motorists and other road users.

The agency also said the programme would strengthen its partnership with communities along the road corridor and reinforce its commitment to maintaining federal road infrastructure across the country.
