“750k became 1.6M” — Health worker narrates how colleagues paid nurse’s medical bill for five months

A health worker has narrated the ordeal of a nurse who reportedly visited four government hospitals seeking urgent treatment for acute appendicitis before eventually undergoing surgery at the private hospital where she worked.

According to the narrator, the nurse developed abdominal pain while on duty, prompting efforts to get her an ultrasound scan despite alleged resistance over payment.

The scan reportedly revealed acute appendicitis, requiring urgent medical attention. However, the narrator claimed the private hospital demanded a ₦750,000 deposit before booking the nurse for surgery, despite her being an employee earning less than ₦180,000 monthly.

Nurse reportedly turned away from four hospitals

Unable to immediately meet the financial requirement, arrangements were made to take the nurse to a government hospital.

The narrator claimed she was subsequently taken to four different government hospitals but could not secure admission.

According to the health worker, “She went to 4 different government hospitals and ‘No bed space’ was all they said and turned them back (not even minding she was a nurse!).”

With no alternative secured, the nurse was eventually returned to the private hospital.

Colleagues agree to salary deductions for surgery

The narrator said the patient, alongside the health worker and three other nurses, signed an agreement allowing deductions from their salaries until the medical bill was settled.

By the time surgery was performed, the narrator claimed the appendix had ruptured, requiring an exploratory laparotomy rather than the initially anticipated appendectomy.

The health worker said, “750k became 1.6M and we had to pay it for 5 months till it was completed.”

The narrator, however, confirmed that the nurse eventually recovered, adding, “She is fine now but just putting this out here.”
