'Human printer': Why is everyone talking about Trump aide Natalie Harp?

White House aide Natalie Harp has gone from being a largely anonymous figure to one of the most talked-about people in US politics.

So who is Natalie Harp?

The 35-year-old is one of the closest aides to US president Donald Trump. Indeed, many see her as Trump’s ‘gatekeeper’. Harp controls access to the president and what he reads and watches.

This role would traditionally be carried out by the White House chief of staff, but Trump’s chief of staff Susie Wiles takes a more hands off approach with the president, attempting to influence policy instead.

Why has her name gone viral?

Georgia senator Jon Ossoff, who is running to hold his seat in a midterm election in November, has launched numerous attacks on Trump. In a viral moment from a recent rally, he mentioned Harp, after she was named as one of the figures who joined Trump in a food container in a Secret Service ruse following a viable Iranian threat.

“He doesn’t want to do the job,” Ossoff said at the rally. “He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenceless flying palace gifted by the Emir of Qatar.”

Since then, searches for her name have skyrocketed on all the large search engines, while she has become a household name.

Why is she dubbed the ‘human printer’?

Trump, 80, is notoriously tech shy. He only learned to text during his first presidential run, while he stopped tweeting prolifically following his ban from the platform in the wake of the US Capitol riot.

Harp is known to compose his posts on Truth Social. Meanwhile, she regularly follows Trump’s golf cart on courses carrying a mini printer which she uses to show him favourable news articles and posts that he approves of.

In a letter to Trump, seen by The New York Times, Harp apologises for chasing him around his course in Scotland.

“I also am sorry if I was an embarrassment walking the course in Scotland,” she wrote.

“I want things to always be right between us. I also know I’ve been distracted all week (forgetting to eat throughout the days, and even forgetting to sleep, and only catching a couple hours at a time).”

The letter concluded: “With all my heart, Natalie.”

Are there other letters?

According to reports, yes. The Secret Service was understood to be alarmed at the personal nature of the notes, which Harp leaves in places Trump conducts his daily business and meetings.

In another letter, seen by The Daily Beast, Harp told Trump she wanted to bring him “joy”.

Harp reportedly wrote: “I never want to bring you anything but joy. I’m sorry I lost my focus. You are all that matters to me. I don’t want to ever let you down. Thank you for being my guardian and protector in this life.”

The letter had the same sign-off: “With all my heart, Natalie.”

How did Harp find herself in Trump’s inner circle?

Harp’s connection with Trump came after she survived cancer.

She said Trump’s Right to Try legislation saved her life, although some medical experts have questioned whether the laws were necessary for her to receive life-saving treatment.

This led to a speaking engagement at the 2020 Republican National Convention.

‘It’s still the economy, stupid’: Former Obama adviser says Democrats winning on messaging

Harp worked as a presenter for the right-wing One America News Network, where her staunch defence of Trump and his policies got his attention.

She joined Trump’s team in 2022, and made sure to follow him whenever possible, which reportedly made other White House aides uncomfortable.

In ‘Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump’, journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan report that Trump said Harp “was the only one who loved him as much as his wife and his kids”.
