“FG Declares Tuesday, August 25 Public Holiday For Eid ul Mawlid” — Urges Nigerians To Pray For Peace, Unity

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

The declaration was announced on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, extended greetings to Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora, urging them to use the occasion to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.

The minister identified compassion, humility and service to humanity as values Nigerians should embrace, particularly at a time when the country requires greater understanding, tolerance and unity.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He stressed that the message of the celebration should extend beyond the Muslim community, encouraging all Nigerians to reflect on values capable of strengthening national cohesion.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he added.

The Interior Minister also called on Nigerians to use the holiday to pray for peace, stability and greater unity across the country.

According to him, maintaining national unity is a collective responsibility, and citizens should contribute to an atmosphere of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

Tunji-Ojo further appealed to Muslims and other Nigerians participating in the celebration to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly throughout the holiday.

He wished the Muslim community a joyous and peaceful Eid ul Mawlid celebration.

The minister also reiterated the commitment of the administration of President Bola Tinubu to safeguarding lives and property and maintaining peace throughout the country.

With the declaration, federal workers and members of the public will observe Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a nationwide public holiday in commemoration of Eid ul Mawlid.
