Brighton Thrash 10-Man Aston Villa 4-0 In Premier League Opener

Brighton & Hove Albion began their new Premier League campaign in spectacular fashion on Sunday, cruising to a 4-0 victory over Europa League winners Aston Villa at the American Express Stadium.

The Seagulls raced into a four-goal lead before half-time, with Maxim De Cuyper scoring once and contributing to an own goal, while Jack Hinshelwood struck twice in a devastating first-half spell.

Brighton took the lead after just eight minutes when De Cuyper’s effort hit the post before going in off Villa defender Victor Lindelöf.

The Belgian then doubled Brighton’s advantage in the 18th minute, finishing from close range after Georginio Rutter created the opening.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side continued to dominate and made it 3-0 in the 30th minute. De Cuyper’s cross was turned back across goal by Diego Gómez, allowing Hinshelwood to tap home.

Hinshelwood struck again just a minute later after Yasin Ayari won possession from João Gomes inside the Villa box, leaving Brighton four goals ahead before the half-hour mark.

Villa’s difficult afternoon worsened in the 40th minute when Gomes was sent off following a VAR review after he kicked out at Rutter. The Brazilian had already been booked earlier in the half.

Aston Villa had shown some promise early on, with Emiliano Buendía going close inside the opening five minutes, but Unai Emery’s side were eventually overwhelmed by Brighton’s intensity.

Brighton controlled the second half and comfortably protected their four-goal advantage as Villa failed to mount a meaningful comeback.

The result gives Brighton a dream start to the campaign, while Villa face serious questions after a performance that exposed concerns over their squad depth and preparations following a busy summer.

Hinshelwood was named player of the match after his two-goal display, earning a BBC Sport user rating of 8.63, ahead of De Cuyper on 8.47 and Rutter on 8.01.

Villa’s defeat also comes amid uncertainty over the futures of several key players, including striker Ollie Watkins and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

Brighton will now turn their attention to their Conference League play-off second leg against Tromsø of Norway on Thursday, August 27, following a goalless draw in the first leg.

For Villa, however, the focus will be on recovering quickly from one of their heaviest defeats in recent memory and finding answers after a disastrous opening day.
