The Benue State Police Command has commenced “Operation Velvet” to enforce traffic regulations, improve road safety and reduce traffic incidents and congestion across the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu, the Command said the operation was launched in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The exercise will target motorists, tricycle operators, motorcyclists and other road users, with emphasis on compliance with traffic signs, one-way restrictions and speed limits.
The police said the operation would also address overloading and ensure that motorists possess valid vehicle documents, including roadworthiness certificates.
According to the Command, officers will check the validity of drivers’ licences and proper vehicle registration, as well as covered or obscure number plates and whether plate numbers correspond with vehicle documents.
The police said the use of unauthorised tinted glass and other traffic violations would also be addressed in accordance with the law.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus C.N. Nwadiogbu, directed officers involved in the operation to carry out their duties professionally while respecting human rights and engaging members of the public appropriately.
He also stressed that enforcement must be accompanied by effective traffic management.

Nwadiogbu warned officers against extortion, harassment and intimidation of road users, stressing that the police would not tolerate such conduct.
“Officers are to enforce the law firmly but professionally at all times,” he said.
The Command said the primary objective of Operation Velvet was to promote compliance with road-use regulations and make roads safer, adding that offenders involved in serious traffic or criminal violations would be prosecuted.
It urged motorists and other road users to comply with traffic rules and ensure that their vehicle and driving documents were valid and up to date.
The Command reiterated that Operation Velvet was “a safety and enforcement initiative, not a platform for harassment or extortion,” and reaffirmed its commitment to safer roads across Benue State.
