Cross River: Man Wanted After Allegedly Setting Mother Ablaze Over Witchcraft Allegations

A middle-aged man identified as Emmanuel Akposi has reportedly been declared wanted by the police after allegedly attacking and setting his elderly mother, Mrs Atim Akposi, ablaze in Ojo community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 14, after the suspect allegedly accused his mother of being responsible for the death of his child and of practising witchcraft.
According to a family member, Emmanuel had allegedly made such accusations against his mother for several years. He reportedly attacked her before allegedly pouring fuel on her and setting her on fire.
The victim was taken to a community health centre before being transferred to Akamkpa General Hospital and subsequently to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for further treatment. She reportedly died in the early hours of Monday from the injuries sustained in the attack.
The family said the incident was reported to the Uyanga Divisional Police Station, which has commenced an investigation and launched a search for the suspect.
Meanwhile, the Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW) has condemned the incident, describing it as a tragic consequence of witchcraft accusations and superstition.
AfAW Director Leo Igwe called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the suspect and urged religious institutions to avoid promoting narratives that could encourage witch-hunting or violence against people accused of witchcraft.
The incident has renewed concerns over the dangers of witchcraft accusations and the need for communities to address such claims through lawful and peaceful means rather than violence.
