Anambra CP introduces checkpoint monitoring to curb police extortion

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has introduced a monitoring mechanism through the command’s operational control rooms to closely supervise police checkpoints, patrol teams and other operational activities across the state.

In a press statement on Sunday, the spokesperson for the command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the initiative followed feedback received by the CP during his recent Anambra Security Stakeholders’ Interactive Sessions across the three senatorial districts.

Ikenga said the mechanism was aimed at strengthening effective policing, accountability and professionalism, while eliminating extortion, harassment and other forms of abuse against members of the public by police personnel.

He said, “Under the new strategy, the Command’s Operational Control Rooms will maintain closer oversight of patrol formations and checkpoints, with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Team Commanders expected to account for the activities of personnel deployed to strategic locations.

“Reports and complaints relating to misconduct, extortion or other forms of unprofessional conduct will be promptly received, monitored and escalated for necessary action.”

According to him, CP Nnanna Ama stressed that while the command remained committed to providing effective security and protecting the lives and property of Ndi Anambra and residents, no police officer would be permitted to abuse the responsibility entrusted to him or her by the Nigeria Police Force to exploit members of the public.

“The commissioner further directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Team Commanders to ensure strict compliance with the directive, warning that any personnel found engaging in extortion or other forms of misconduct will face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the law and established regulations.

“The command therefore calls on Ndi Anambra and other members of the public to support this initiative by reporting incidents of extortion, harassment or other unprofessional conduct through the Command’s established communication channels, including the Operational Control Room on 07039194332 or the Police Public Relations Officer on 08039334002, as well as the dedicated WhatsApp number of the Commissioner of Police, 09169531886,” the statement added.

The command reiterated its commitment to professional, people-oriented and accountable policing and assured members of the public that credible complaints would receive prompt attention and appropriate action.
