MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) — a violent extremist organization — overran a Nigerian military Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mairari, Guzamala Local Government Area, during a midnight assault on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. Local residents, security officials, and multiple international news agencies report significant casualties, destroyed military assets, and a temporary withdrawal of troops toward Monguno, 18 km away.

Daniel Abba, a local trader familiar with the recurring attacks, told TruthNigeria, “Dozens of soldiers were killed and slaughtered. Some were captured alive.” He added that Internally Displaced Persons camps now risk being forced to pay tax to the terrorists because soldiers failed to fully protect the area, leaving communities vulnerable.

“Government is only focusing on Elections. Terrorists are focusing on taking over more territories and overrunning military formations,” Abba told TruthNigeria.

In a separate interview, Fati Usman, a displaced female victim, told TruthNigeria the reports of heavy fighting were accurate.

“Our servicemen are paying a heavy price. The attacks lasted for hours without airforce intervention. The terrorists have superior firepower. We are living in fear,” Usman said.

She noted that assaults were occurring amid the peak of related Sahel-area violence, with relatives in refugee camps in Niger Republic and Chad describing heavy losses, and that fleeing to neighbouring countries was itself dangerous.

Confirming the incident to The PUNCH, Guzamala Local Government Area Chairman Umar Sheriff said there were no civilian casualties and that the terrorists specifically targeted the military post. He stated the assault occurred around midnight and lasted more than two hours.

“Though I don’t have statistics regarding the casualties yet, because it’s not everything we are told. It’s a security matter. But I know that no civilian was killed.” He described the attack as major and said the military repelled the fighters, adding that the situation was calm and that he planned to visit the community.

Local sources cited by The PUNCH reported casualties on both sides, with unverified rumours that seven soldiers were killed. Separate reports published by AFP, citing a Nigerian military officer and residents, stated that a large group of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters overran the base in Mairari village in the Lake Chad area overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, killed 15 soldiers and five members of an anti-jihadist militia (Civilian Joint Task Force), looted weapons, and burnt the facility. The same accounts said troops withdrew toward Monguno, about 18 kilometres away, and that several soldiers were missing. Residents Grema Butari and Ahmad Sherif described a prolonged battle, the destruction of the base and vehicles, and said the attackers were believed to have come from Gudumbali in neighbouring Guzamala (Arab News/AFP).

Reuters, citing military sources and residents, reported that suspected Islamist fighters (linked to Boko Haram/ISWAP) killed at least 10 soldiers and wounded at least 20 others in the coordinated assault on the army base in Guzamala LGA, overrunning troops, destroying military vehicles, and setting fire to parts of nearby Mairari village. More than 20 people were wounded overall, with reports of at least five civilians and a forest guard killed in the broader action.

Sahara Reporters, quoting military sources, reported about 15 soldiers were killed, many more injured or missing, and extensive destruction including burnt makeshift shelters, sandbags, gun trucks, and Hilux vehicles after the hours-long battle at the Mairari base.

Premium Times, citing security sources, reported that 15 soldiers and five Civilian Joint Task Force members were killed in the midnight attack by jihadists on the Mairari base.

News Central TV and Firstpost carried the AFP account of 15 soldiers and five militia members killed, the base razed, weapons looted, and troops forced to withdraw.

The Forward Operating Base at Mairari has come under repeated attack in recent months. Military statements on earlier incidents at the same location reported soldier and Civilian Joint Task Force deaths during night assaults by suspected ISWAP fighters. In the wider Lake Chad and Borno frontline, published accounts have recorded the deaths of commanding officers, including Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq, who was wounded in action in Kukawa Local Government Area and later died while being evacuated, and Lieutenant Colonel S.I. Iliyasu of 222 Battalion during an attack in Konduga. Reports of the latest Mairari clash indicate casualties among troops defending the position according to Sahara Reporters and the Daily Trust.

Military statements on previous operations at Mairari and surrounding areas have reported the recovery of weapons including AK-47 rifles, magazines, and RPG tubes after engagements, along with the neutralisation of terrorist fighters. On 10 October 2026, the Air Component of the Joint Task Force North East conducted a strike at Badu Village, south of Gudumbali in Guzamala Local Government Area, which the military said neutralised more than 40 ISWAP fighters, including a prominent commander, and destroyed two vehicles and approximately 20 motorcycles. Captain Mohammed Goni, Military Information Officer, issued the statement on the operation, according to The PUNCH.

On 1 October 2026, Borno State Police confirmed that 15 farmers and firewood gatherers were killed in an ambush in Marte Local Government Area as reported by The Nation and The News Guru.

Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama has documented patterns of ISWAP activity in the Lake Chad basin, including the imposition of levies on civilians and repeated assaults on military positions in Guzamala and neighbouring areas.

The military had not issued a full public statement confirming casualty figures for the latest Mairari incident at the time of this report. The situation in the community was described as calm by the local government chairman pending his assessment visit.
