Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio has been convicted of a road safety offence after he was caught driving under the influence of alcohol in Gran Canaria, Spain.
The 23-year-old footballer was stopped by police at a routine alcohol checkpoint on the GC-1 motorway in San Bartolomé de Tirajana at around 6:30 a.m. on August 16.
Asencio was reportedly driving a Porsche Macan GTS when officers stopped him.
He took two breath tests. The first showed an alcohol level of 0.90 mg/l, while the second recorded 0.88 mg/l. In Spain, a reading above 0.60 mg/l is considered a criminal offence.
Reports said Asencio was not involved in an accident and was not driving recklessly when police stopped him. After the necessary checks were completed, his companion took control of the vehicle.
Three days later, on August 19, Asencio appeared in a fast-track court hearing in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
The Real Madrid player admitted what happened, accepted the punishment requested by prosecutors and expressed regret over the incident, according to EFE.
The court ordered Asencio to pay €120 per day for four months, bringing the total fine to €14,400.
His driving licence was also suspended for eight months.
The conviction comes as the Real Madrid defender faces a separate court case in Gran Canaria.
