Bundesliga: Bayern fail to score first time in 59 matches

Bayern Munich were held to a goalless draw by newly promoted Schalke in Gelsenkirchen, ending the Bundesliga champions’ remarkable run of scoring in 59 consecutive competitive matches according to BBC Sport on Saturday.
Luis Diaz came closest to breaking the deadlock for Bayern, but missed two excellent opportunities either side of half-time.
The Colombian forward first fired wide when presented with a one-on-one chance against Loris Karius. He later attempted to chip the Schalke goalkeeper, but the effort was cleared before it could cross the line.
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany had rotated his side following an impressive start to the season, with Harry Kane and Michael Olise beginning on the bench. Bayern dominated possession in the opening half but struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Kane was introduced at half-time, while Olise and Jamal Musiala came on with 35 minutes remaining as Bayern increased the pressure.
Musiala was making his first appearance of the season after suffering seizures during two pre-season matches, and his introduction helped Bayern become more threatening in the final stages.
Konrad Laimer sliced an effort into the side-netting from close range, while Kane was denied late on when Karius produced a superb fingertip save to keep out a drive heading for the top corner.
Despite Bayern’s late pressure, Schalke’s disciplined defence held firm to secure a valuable point and their first of the season.
The draw also ended Bayern’s run of finishing a Bundesliga matchday top of the table for the first time in 67 matchdays.
For Kane, it was another frustrating afternoon in his pursuit of 100 Bundesliga goals. The England captain made his 96th appearance in the competition and remains two goals short of reaching the century.
Bayern now turn their attention to the Champions League, with Bodø/Glimt visiting on Thursday, before they travel to Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg on 13 September.
