“I couldn’t ignore what I heard”

A Nigerian lady identified as Winnie B Onuh on Facebook has sparked reactions online after revealing that she called off her wedding over a comment made by her future mother-in-law during their family introduction.
Winnie said she had been in a relationship with her fiancé for almost three years and considered him a kind, respectful and hardworking man.
However, she claimed that a comment made by his mother about childbirth raised concerns about what her future might look like in the marriage.
‘I Couldn’t Ignore What I Heard’
According to Winnie, everything appeared to be going well until their family introduction.
She said that after the formalities, family members were eating and chatting when her future mother-in-law made a comment about how women in their family give birth.
She recalled:
“In our family, no woman has ever given birth through a Caesarean section. It has never happened, and by God’s grace, it will never happen, you too will deliver naturally.”
Winnie said everyone laughed at the comment, while some people even responded, “Amen!”
She initially thought the woman was joking and forced a smile.
However, the comment continued to bother her, prompting her to speak to her fiancé a few days later.
‘My Family Won’t Agree to It’
Winnie said she asked her fiancé whether his mother was actually serious about the C-section comment.
According to her, he responded:
“She’s serious ooo. But don’t worry, God won’t let that happen to you.”
She said the response did not reassure her, so she asked him what would happen if a doctor recommended a C-section to save her life or that of their baby.
Her fiancé reportedly told her:
“Let’s just pray it never comes to that.”
Winnie said she pressed further because that was not the answer she was looking for.
She asked him directly whether he would support a doctor’s decision if a C-section became medically necessary.
According to her, he said:
“Honestly… my family won’t agree to it. They’ve never accepted it before.”
‘Would My Husband Stand Beside Me?’
Winnie said the conversation changed the way she viewed the relationship.
She explained that she was not afraid of pregnancy or childbirth but became concerned about whether her husband would be able to make independent decisions when his family’s beliefs conflicted with her safety.
She wrote:
“I wasn’t afraid of pregnancy. The issue was no longer about childbirth. It was about whether my life could one day depend on other people’s beliefs.”
The lady reveals she spent days thinking about the possibility of facing complications during pregnancy and wondered whether her husband would support her if doctors recommended an emergency procedure.
“What if I had complications? What if the doctors said there was no other option? Would my husband stand beside me… or beside his family’s tradition?”
She Calls Off the Wedding Two Weeks Later
Winnie said she eventually made the difficult decision to end the engagement.
“I ended the engagement two weeks later.”
She said the decision disappointed her parents and angered her former fiancé’s family.
“My parents were disappointed.
“His family called me disrespectful.
“Even some of my friends said I was being dramatic. People keep telling me I overreacted. Even my parents think I threw away a good man because of one conversation.”
She added that some people accused her of looking for an excuse to leave, while others said she had abandoned a good man because of a hypothetical situation.
‘Did I Make the Right Decision?’
Despite the criticism, Winnie said she continues to question whether she made the right decision.
She asked: “Was I wrong for walking away from a future where my life might one day become negotiable?”
“Did I make the right decision?”
