Violence broke out during a protest by students of the Techiman Krobo Nursing Training College on Monday, July 27, 2026.
The students were reportedly protesting what they described as unfair treatment by management and poor welfare conditions at the school.
The protest reportedly became violent after some students allegedly threw stones at police officers. The police then arrested some students and fired gunshots while trying to disperse the crowd.
Videos circulating online show some students holding stones and running away. The videos also show police officers firing gunshots and arresting some of the protesters.
NUGS Condemns Alleged Assault on Students
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has condemned the alleged physical assault of students by police officers during the protest.
In a statement signed by NUGS President Rashid Ibrahim and released on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, the union said the students were forced to demonstrate after several attempts to get management to address their concerns failed.
NUGS said the protest was linked to several welfare problems, including poor feeding arrangements, poor sanitary conditions, and weak communication between the college management and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).
The union said the students demonstrated as a last resort after exhausting internal efforts to resolve the issues through dialogue.
“NUGS strongly condemns the reported assault on these students. The use of force against unarmed students who were peacefully expressing their concerns is unacceptable and has no place in a democratic society,” the statement said.
NUGS Calls for Professional Conduct
Although NUGS acknowledged the police’s responsibility to maintain law and order, it said officers must carry out their duties professionally and respect human dignity.
The union’s statement comes amid public concern over videos showing police officers firing gunshots and arresting students during the protest.
The circumstances surrounding the use of force and the events that led to the confrontation remain a subject of public discussion.
