NiMet, AKADEMIYA2063 Partner to Deploy AI For Climate

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and AKADEMIYA2063 have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing the use of artificial intelligence (AI), climate data analytics, and research to improve weather forecasting, climate resilience, agricultural productivity, and food security in Nigeria.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, during a ceremony involving key officials from both organisations.

NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Prof. Charles Anosike, signed on behalf of the agency, while AKADEMIYA2063 was represented by its Managing Director, Dr. Debisi Araba, and Director of Data Intelligence & Governance and National Representative for Senegal, Dr. Racine Ly.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Anosike said NiMet was preparing for the future by embracing artificial intelligence and digital innovation to improve its operations.

He disclosed that the agency had already established an AI Research Team to explore the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in weather forecasting, climate information services, and operational efficiency.

According to him, the partnership with AKADEMIYA2063 would further strengthen NiMet’s efforts to develop modern, technology-driven climate solutions.

Dr. Araba described the collaboration as a significant milestone in building Africa’s capacity in data analytics, research, and evidence-based policymaking.

He said combining AKADEMIYA2063’s expertise in data intelligence with NiMet’s meteorological capabilities would help deliver practical solutions for climate adaptation, food security, and sustainable development.

Under the MoU, both organisations will collaborate on the use of AI to enhance climate monitoring, seasonal forecasting, early warning systems, and data-driven decision-making.

The partnership will also focus on developing AI-enabled climate services and improving agricultural planning through reliable weather and climate information.

To ensure effective implementation, NiMet and AKADEMIYA2063 will establish a Joint Technical Committee that will work with NiMet’s AI Research Team to identify priority areas, coordinate activities, and develop initiatives aimed at advancing climate services, innovation, and sustainable development in Nigeria.
