“With Hearts Weighed Down By Immeasurable Grief” — Former Delta Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan Dies At 71, Family Announces

Uduaghan, who governed Delta State from 2007 to 2015, died on Monday morning, October 19, 2026, according to a statement issued by his family and signed by Toju Anire Uduaghan.
The family announced his passing in a statement titled, “Announcement of the Passing of His Excellency, Dr. Chief Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, CON,” describing his death as a painful loss to his family, Delta State and those whose lives he touched during his years of public service.
“With hearts weighed down by immeasurable grief and profound sorrow,” the family announced the passing of the former governor.
It described Uduaghan as a source of strength, a father figure, beloved brother and uncle, and a respected elder whose memory and legacy would remain with those who knew him.
“He was a source of strength, a father figure, a beloved brother and uncle, and a respected elder. We will deeply miss his presence and forever cherish the memories and legacy he leaves behind,” the statement said.
Before becoming governor, Uduaghan served in the Delta State Government as Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 and later as Secretary to the State Government from 2003 to 2007.
He subsequently became governor in 2007 and served two terms until 2015, spending eight years at the helm of affairs in the oil-rich state.
A medical doctor before entering full-time politics, Uduaghan’s years in government covered both the health sector and the wider administration of Delta State.
He later remained active in Nigerian politics after leaving office. In 2019, he contested for the Delta South Senatorial seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, according to the final list of candidates published by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
His death comes months after false reports about his passing circulated in June 2026, prompting a denial at the time. Monday’s announcement, however, came directly from his family.
The family expressed gratitude to God for Uduaghan’s life and service and prayed for comfort for relatives, friends, political associates and others mourning him.
“Your memory will forever remain in our hearts, and your legacy will endure in the lives of those you touched,” the family added.
Further details, including funeral arrangements, had not been announced at the time of filing this report.
