Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has vowed that anyone found responsible for Saturday’s attack on supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the state will be prosecuted, regardless of political connections.

The governor spoke in a video message posted on his Facebook page on Monday night following reports of sporadic shootings at the NDC secretariat in Enugu during the party’s governorship campaign flag-off.

Mbah said he expected the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the violence and disclosed that he would seek a formal briefing on the progress of the investigation.

“Anyone found responsible for criminal acts must be held accountable through the proper legal process regardless of their political connections,” he said.

“We must allow the evidence to establish what happened.”

The governor stressed that every citizen should be free to exercise lawful political rights without fear of violence or intimidation, irrespective of political affiliation.

“I will continue to work with the relevant security authorities to ensure that citizens can go about their lives and participate in lawful political activities safely,” he said, adding that political differences were a normal feature of democracy.

Mbah said his immediate concern was for those who experienced fear during the incident and the families affected by the violence.

“I want to assure them that their safety and well-being matter to me personally,” he said.

He added: “Enugu belongs to all of us and I remain committed to protecting the security, dignity and democratic rights of every person who calls this state home.”

The violence was not limited to the party secretariat. NDC supporters were also reportedly attacked at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Emene while attempting to gather to welcome the party’s 2027 governorship candidate, Chinyeaka Ohaa.

The Enugu State Government subsequently denied responsibility for the attacks.

Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, had said findings available to the government indicated that the NDC attempted to gather at the airport without approval.

The NDC, however, rejected that account, with its Enugu State Secretary describing as false the claim that the party planned to hold its campaign flag-off at the airport without approval.

The competing claims have now become part of the wider controversy surrounding the incidents, with the police ordering an investigation into the violence.

Mbah said the investigation should be allowed to establish the facts and determine responsibility, insisting that anyone implicated should face the law irrespective of political affiliation or status.
