“Let somebody have your bank/mobile app PIN” — Widow warns, reveals her predicament after husband’s death

A Nigerian widow has cried out over her inability to access ₦395,000 left in her late husband’s bank account more than a year after his death.

According to the woman, her husband died in January 2025, but she only discovered that he had ₦395,000 in his account after his death.

She said that despite making efforts to access the funds, she has been unable to withdraw the money because of procedures required by the bank.

‘We’ve been on this case for over eight months’

The widow said the process had lasted for more than eight months, with no clear resolution in sight.

She explained that she had repeatedly travelled to the location where the matter was being handled, spending a significant portion of the money she was trying to recover on transportation.

“This thing is stressful. I can tell you that I’ve spent over 20% of that money transporting to this place.”

She added that the place was far from her residence and that there had been occasions when she travelled there only to return without achieving anything.

“I’ve been coming here, going, coming here, and going there. Sometimes I won’t come, and I will not even do anything. I will go back. Until today, no progress at all.”

Widow advises couples to share banking details

Reflecting on her experience, the woman advised married couples to ensure their spouses know their banking PINs and have access to their financial information in case of an emergency.

“If you know that you’re a man, you’re a woman, and you have a bank account, I beg you in the name of God, let somebody have your PIN to your app.”

She specifically advised married people to let their spouses know their mobile banking and ATM PINs, saying this could prevent difficulties if one partner dies unexpectedly.

“Now, you’re not doing this thing because of weakness or anything, you are doing it based off of trust and based off of tomorrow, in case something happens tomorrow.”

‘Imagine leaving funds behind’

The widow said the situation could become particularly difficult when a deceased person’s family has no immediate financial resources.

“Now, imagine a situation whereby the wife he left behind, or the family he left behind, do not even have 1,000 Naira to feed the next minute. How, like, how would they, what would they do?”

She urged people to consider the possibility of unforeseen circumstances and make adequate arrangements for their families to avoid unnecessary hardship.

“Imagine you leaving funds behind, and then your family don’t have access to it, because they need to go through so many procedures to be able to get that money.”

The widow maintained that sharing access details with a trusted spouse could help families avoid some of the difficulties she has experienced following her husband’s death.
