“Unlawful Display Of Firearm, If Established, Violates The Firearms Act” — Police Invite Kano NDC Candidate Aminu Warkal Over Viral Rally Video

The Kano State Police Command has invited Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, a politician and candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the Kano State House of Assembly, for questioning over the alleged public display of a firearm during a political gathering in the state.
The police said the alleged conduct, if established, could amount to a violation of the Firearms Act and was capable of creating fear, intimidating members of the public and disturbing public peace and security.
The invitation followed the circulation of a video on social media in which Warkal was allegedly seen holding and displaying what appeared to be a pump-action rifle while surrounded by supporters at a political event.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Kano, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said officers discovered the video during a routine cyber patrol carried out as part of the Command’s intelligence-led surveillance activities.
According to the police, Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori subsequently directed that Warkal be invited to the Command Headquarters at Bompai, Kano, for questioning.
“On the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, the said Aminu Abdullahi Warkal was invited to the Command Headquarters, Bompai, Kano,” the statement said.
The Command added that Warkal was at its State Intelligence Department while investigation into the circumstances surrounding the video was ongoing.
The police stressed that the allegation remained under investigation but warned that an unlawful public display of a firearm, if proved, would raise both criminal and public-order concerns.
“The alleged unlawful display of firearm, if established, constitutes a clear violation of the provisions of the Firearms Act and is capable of inciting fear, intimidating members of the public and breaching public peace and security,” the Command said.
Warkal has been identified in several reports as the NDC candidate for the Gwale State House of Assembly constituency. Some reports said the video was recorded during a political rally in the Janbulo area of Gwale Local Government Area.
The viral footage generated public attention as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, prompting the police to warn political actors and their supporters against the display of weapons at rallies and other gatherings.
The Commissioner of Police said the Command would not tolerate conduct capable of threatening security, regardless of the political or social status of the person involved.
“The Commissioner of Police will not tolerate any act of lawlessness, thuggery, or display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, irrespective of the status of the person involved,” the statement said.
The Command consequently urged politicians, supporters and other stakeholders to conduct themselves peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, the Firearms Act and other applicable laws throughout the political season.
“All political activities must be conducted in a manner that promotes peace, tolerance and respect for the rule of law,” it added.
The police reiterated that the investigation into Warkal’s alleged conduct was still in progress and did not announce any charge against him in the statement.
The Kano State Police Command also assured residents that it would continue to take measures aimed at protecting lives and property and maintaining public order before, during and after the election period.
