“If you was a gold digger in the 1990s” — Lady tells mother how her marriage choices could have changed their lives

A Nigerian lady has sparked a conversation about marriage, financial stability and parental advice after questioning her mother’s past relationship choices and asking why she expects her to follow the same path.
In a statement shared online, the lady reflected on how her mother’s decision to marry might have affected the family’s financial circumstances and opportunities.
She suggested that her mother, whom she described as beautiful, could have secured a more comfortable future for her children by marrying a financially stable and sensible man.
The lady also argued that her hard-working nature might have helped her achieve more if she had grown up in the United Kingdom or the United States.
Lady reflects on mother’s marriage decisions
Explaining her conversation with her mother, the lady said, “I was telling my mom recently that mommy if you was a gold digger in the 1990s, when you were getting married and doing free jobs do you know that we’ll probably be in the UK or US and I’ll be one of the chill chill kids cause I’m so hardworking?”
She went on to suggest that her mother’s choices had influenced the family’s circumstances, adding that she believed her work ethic would have taken her further in a more developed country.
The lady also questioned why her mother wanted her to make similar decisions, despite the challenges she believed her mother had experienced.
Her comments raise questions about marriage and money
Expressing her frustration, she asked her mother, “Now I’m asking her, why do you want me to do the same thing you did? Do you want me to suffer?”
Her remarks touch on a familiar debate about whether financial security should be a major consideration when choosing a life partner.
While her account reflects her personal perspective on her mother’s choices, it also highlights the tension that can arise when parents’ expectations about relationships differ from their children’s ambitions.
