Media personality Abeiku Santana says he would remain in Ghana even if someone offered him a $100,000 monthly salary to live abroad.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority said he would reject the offer if it required him to relocate to the United States or the United Kingdom.
“If you give me $100,000 in a monthly salary to live in America or to live in the UK, I’ll choose Ghana,” he said.
Abeiku believes Ghana offers many opportunities that citizens often fail to recognise.
“So there are more opportunities in Ghana than in America. Do you believe that? Are you sure? So what opportunity have you seized?” he asked.
He said some foreigners and expatriates arrive in Ghana, identify business opportunities and act on them.
Meanwhile, many Ghanaians see the same opportunities but spend their time complaining about the country’s challenges.
“Then foreigners or expatriates come, they see it, and they seize it. We see the opportunity, but we lament. We always complain,” he said.
Abeiku also encouraged people to view problems as possible sources of employment, business and innovation.
“Anything that people are complaining about is opportunity. Opportunity is work. Opportunity is problems,” he said.
He added, “But we don’t like problems.”
His comments have divided social media users.
Some people agreed that Ghana has business opportunities for those with enough capital, knowledge and connections.
Others argued that his position may not reflect the experiences of people dealing with unemployment, low salaries and rising living costs.
Abeiku’s statement represents his personal opinion about opportunities in Ghana. It does not compare salaries, taxes, public services or living costs in the three countries.
