Residents of Kweiman in the Greater Accra Region have apprehended a man accused of posing as an official of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and moving from house to house to collect money under false pretenses.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect had been going around the community claiming to represent ECG, using the company’s name to convince unsuspecting residents to hand over cash.
It did not take long, however, before some sharp-eyed community members grew suspicious of his story and began asking questions he could not convincingly answer.
Word spread quickly, and a crowd soon gathered around the man, demanding to know exactly who he was and which ECG office he worked from.
Unable to produce any identification or satisfy the mounting questions, he was restrained on the spot before residents could take matters into their own hands.
Video footage of the confrontation, which has since circulated on social media, shows the man attempting to shield his face as onlookers pressed him for answers, while a crowd looked on.
Rather than resort to mob justice, the community handed the suspect over to police for questioning. Investigators are expected to establish his true identity, how many households he may have targeted, and whether he acted alone or as part of a wider scam network.
The incident has added to the growing list of impersonation cases involving utility companies across the country, and residents are being urged to always demand proper identification before making any payments to persons claiming to represent ECG or other state institutions.
