Leaders Demand National Action to End Almajiri System in Northern Nigeria

Political, religious and community leaders in Adamawa have called for a united national effort to end the Almajiri system in Northern Nigeria to get children off the streets, stressing the need to secure the future of vulnerable children through education and skills development.

The call was made at the commissioning of start of the art library at the Lutheran University of Nigeria during activities marking the 70th birthday of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

The celebration brought together prominent figures from across political, religious and professional divides, including the Governor of Plateau State, who served as Chairman of the occasion; the Deputy Governor of Gombe State; and former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor.

At the event, the issue of children living and learning on the streets featured prominently, with leaders describing education as one of the most effective tools for addressing poverty, vulnerability and underdevelopment.

They urged leaders across Northern Nigeria to work together to tackle the Almajiri system and ensure that children are provided with access to formal education, vocational training and other opportunities that can enable them to contribute meaningfully to society.

The leaders stressed that the challenge requires a collective approach involving governments at all levels, traditional institutions, religious organisations, communities and other stakeholders.

As part of activities marking his 70th birthday, Boss Mustapha also commissioned a state-of-the-art library at the proposed Lutheran University of Nigeria.

The facility is expected to support learning, research and knowledge development, further underscoring the importance of education in transforming lives and building a more productive society.

Speaking at the occasion, the Archbishop of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria, Panti Filibus, highlighted the importance of education and the role of institutions in shaping the next generation.

The Governor of Plateau State, Manasseh Mufwan, and the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, also used the occasion to reinforce the call for greater attention to education and the future of Nigerian children.

For the celebrant, the milestone was more than an opportunity to celebrate seven decades of life and service.

Boss Mustapha urged the younger generation to remain determined, resilient and prepared to confront the challenges ahead, stressing the importance of courage and commitment in building a better future.

The celebration ended with renewed calls for collective action to ensure that no Nigerian child is left without access to education and the opportunity to build a productive future.
