Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged residents of Rivers State to turn out massively for the 2027 general election and ensure that their votes are counted.

Obi made the call in a statement shared on Friday following his participation in a town hall meeting organised by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Port Harcourt.

The former governor said the engagement provided an opportunity to discuss critical issues affecting Nigerians, including employment, healthcare, education, security and economic opportunities.

He reiterated that if given the opportunity to lead Nigeria, his administration would prioritise education, healthcare and poverty reduction as major drivers of national development.

Obi also cited the experiences of countries such as Bangladesh, Indonesia and India as examples of how purposeful leadership and focused policies could transform economies and improve citizens’ living conditions.

According to him, the renewed commitment among Rivers residents to participate in the 2027 election and protect the integrity of their votes was particularly encouraging.

«“This time around, the people of Rivers State will vote, and their votes MUST count,” Obi declared.»

He challenged Rivers voters to make the 2027 election a turning point by demanding a transparent, free and credible electoral process.

Obi further stated that Rivers State could set the pace for credible elections in 2027, stressing that only leaders who emerge through a transparent electoral process could legitimately claim the mandate of the people.

The NDC town hall focused on practical solutions to Nigeria’s development challenges and greater citizen participation in governance.

Obi thanked the NDC leadership, its Rivers State governorship candidate Dumo Lulu-Briggs, Vice-Presidential Candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, party officials and supporters for their participation.

He said the broader objective of the opposition movement was to “rescue Nigeria, rebuild our institutions, and restore hope to our people.”
