Crisis as Federal Girls College management, PTA clash

The Concerned Parents of the Federal Government Girls’ College Owerri (FGGCO) have petitioned the Federal Ministry of Education to investigate the new Principal, Mrs Gladys Ozoemena Onyeguiri, for alleged high handedness, extortion and disruptive policies.

The Concerned Parents in the petition signed by one Mrs Clara Ihejirika, appealed to the authorities of unity schools to urgently intervene in the Warri establishment, warning that the issues may adversely affect the reputation, discipline, welfare, and smooth administration of the institution, if not immediately addressed.

According to the petition, within approximately four months of the new Principal’s assumption of office, many members of staff were reportedly transferred,

The workers, according to the petition, include Mrs Ogueri, the VP, Student Affairs 1; Mrs Ejelonu, VP, Student Affairs 11; Chief Stella Orji, VP, Academics 1; Mrs Okoro Ebere: Head of Subject, Social Studies; and Dr Mrs Okanne, Assistant Director.

The parents pointed out that the transfers were effected between August 2, and August 20, 2026.

Ihejirika picked holes in the reported termination of the appointment of one Mr. Mich, a part time Mathematics teacher, saying his removal was unjust, adding that the teacher had already filed legal proceedings to challenge the termination and called on the education ministry to unearth the circumstances to ascertain if due process was followed.

Further, she sought explanation over the allegation that the just graduated SS3 students were ordered to pay N1,000 and N,2000 for clearance, a practice she said was strange in the school.

The petition read partly, “According to information available to concerned parents, clearance forms which were previously provided to outgoing students without charges now reportedly attracted payments of ₦1,000 or ₦2,000, with the collection allegedly being handled Mrs Morah, while students also provide A4 sheets. Parents deserve transparency concerning any approved fees or charges imposed on students.

“There are further concerns regarding some six students who were reportedly charged between N100,000 and 120,000 as disciplinary measures. Parents are concerned that such amounts may be disproportionate and that disciplinary measures should be considered where appropriate, including supervised manual labour, counselling or other approved corrective measures.

“The request is not that students who violate school rules should go unpunished. Rather, the authorities should establish whether the sanctions imposed are authorised, proportionate and consistent with the approved disciplinary framework for Federal Government Colleges”, Ihejirika said.

However, the Public Relations Officer of the school PTA, KingDavid Anokwuru denied the allegations, saying the PTA chairman was running the union unilaterally and that because the principal cautioned him to order, he was fighting back.

Anokwuru said, “This attack is coming because the principal refused to compromise standards. She insisted on accountability. She blocked leakages. She restored order.  Those who thrived in confusion are uncomfortable with structure.

“We call on all well-meaning parents, old girls, and stakeholders to ignore this faceless allegations. We encourage you; make your findings, ask questions, visit the school, speak to the girls.

“FGGC Owerri is on a new path under Mrs Onyeguiri. The glory days of the college are back. We stand firmly with our director/principal”, he said.
