NFF names Eguavoen interim coach of Super Falcons

The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed Augustine Eguavoen as interim head coach of the Super Falcons ahead of the team’s 2028 Olympic Games qualifying campaign.
Eguavoen, a former Super Eagles head coach, will lead the women’s national team in their second-round, two-legged qualifier against Comoros in October.
He will be assisted by Christopher Danjuma, head coach of Nasarawa Amazons, while Ayisat Yusuf, a former Super Falcons defender, and Olatunji Baruwa, former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer, will also be part of the technical crew.
Nigeria will face Comoros in both legs of the second-round tie at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and 13.
The Super Falcons received a bye into the second round as one of the top-ranked teams, while Comoros progressed after defeating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.
Nigeria must negotiate four rounds of two-legged knockout ties to secure one of Africa’s two available slots for the women’s football event at the 2028 Olympics.
A victory over Comoros would send the Falcons into the third round, scheduled for early 2027, where they would face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco.
The appointment marks Eguavoen’s first managerial assignment with a women’s national team.
His appointment comes weeks after the NFF sacked Justine Madugu and his technical crew following the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
It will be the first time Nigeria will miss the women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.
