Brou triumphs at 2026 Viking Cup sabre tourney

Nigeria’s top fencer, Inkosi Brou, has won the 2026 FIE Satellite Sabre Viking Cup in Iceland, claiming his third international medal for the country, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

After missing the opportunity to compete at the Commonwealth Championships last month in Lagos, Brou turned his attention to the one-day event, emerging as champion of the prestigious tournament sanctioned by the International Fencing Federation.

As the highest-ranked fencer in the field, Brou displayed remarkable composure and skill against opponents from across the globe, including Portugal, the UAE, Italy, the Netherlands, Ecuador, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Jamaica, Hong Kong, Australia, Great Britain and host nation Iceland.

The grandson of the late former Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Dora Akunyili, Brou began his Viking Cup campaign in the round of 16, dispatching UAE’s Hamid Al Maazmi with a commanding 15–4 victory.

He then faced Sweden’s Kenneth Kong in a tense quarter-final, edging through 15–11. In the semi-final, Brou’s experience shone through as he overcame Czech Republic’s Lumir Kral, the No. 4 seed, with a 15–12 win.

Facing Iceland’s Andri Maateev in the final, Brou rose to the occasion with precision and confidence, silencing the home crowd with a dominant 15–6 triumph to secure the title.

At just 18 years old, Brou is already Nigeria’s highest-ranked fencer in the world.

Training at the Scarsdale Fencing Center and the Peter Westbrook Foundation in the United States, he now sets his sights on an even greater milestone — becoming the first Nigerian fencer to compete at the Olympic Games, with Los Angeles 2028 firmly in his vision.

In 2024, Brou secured Nigeria’s first-ever global fencing medal with silver at the World Tournoi Satellite Cup in Reykjavik, while in 2025, he earned bronze at the African Junior Championships in Angola.
