Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has disclosed that it is the right of Cross Riverians to criticize him without fear of arrest, as he instructs aides to withdraw a police complaint against Denis Odama, a young Cross Riverian who was reported to the police over a statement described as derogatory and insidious against the governor.

Otu, in a statement, said he had been fully briefed on the circumstances surrounding Odama’s case and, as a father and leader, had directed the aides involved to withdraw their complaint.

The governor also directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of the state to urgently review the matter and, in the exercise of his constitutional discretion, take the necessary steps to discontinue the case.

According to Otu, the move is intended to facilitate Odama’s release from the correctional centre without further delay and enable him to reunite with his family.

The governor said his decision was informed by his belief in the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, particularly Section 39, which guarantees citizens the right to freedom of expression.

He said he remained committed to upholding the right of Cross Riverians to express themselves, including the right to criticise his administration and person.

“I hold a firm belief and faith in the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, particularly Section 39, which guarantees every citizen the right to freely express themselves,” Otu said.

He, however, urged young people in the state to exercise their constitutional freedom responsibly and in a manner that respects the cultural values and moral standards of Cross River State.

The governor said the people of the state elected him to listen to their suggestions, advice and constructive criticism, adding that he would continue not only to listen but also to act on them.

“You voted me as your Governor to listen and to act on positive suggestions, advice, and constructive criticism, and I will continue not only to listen, but to act accordingly,” he said.

Otu concluded by describing the protection of Cross River State as a collective responsibility, while calling for continued commitment to the state’s wellbeing.

“Cross River State is our collective responsibility to protect,” the governor said.
