‘I Defended You When Edo Gov Harassed You’ – Okonkwo Attacks Peter Obi
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has faulted the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, over a legal action filed against him.
NEWSNGR reports that Okonkwo said he once defended Obi when he was allegedly harassed in Edo State, despite no longer speaking for him.
An Anambra State High Court sitting in Onitsha had authorised Obi to serve court documents on Okonkwo through substituted means after attempts at direct service reportedly failed.
The court directed that the documents be pasted at Okonkwo’s last known residence in Nsukka, Enugu State, or delivered to any adult found there.
The suit followed Okonkwo’s allegations that Obi and some NDC leaders in the South-East demanded extra payments from National Assembly aspirants.
Okonkwo also alleged that Obi personally compiled candidates’ lists from a hotel room in Abuja.
Obi’s lawyers had demanded a retraction, a public apology on Channels Television and social media, N5bn in damages, and an undertaking that Okonkwo would not repeat the allegations.
Speaking on Channels Television, Okonkwo said he did not believe he should reach out to Obi to settle the matter.
He said, “I don’t think I should. You remember even when the governor of Edo State harassed him, even when his life was in danger. I wasn’t speaking for him again.
“But I told him that even though I’m not speaking for him again, he’s my brother, and if anything happens to him, you will know that even if a madman has brothers. I came out to defend you, but you know what, he is taking me to court.”
