The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command says it has arrested 70 suspects following a viral video alleging a robbery incident around Unity Fountain in the Maitama area of Abuja.

The Command disclosed this in a statement by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on Monday, September 14.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, ordered an immediate raid of identified criminal blackspots around Unity Fountain and its environs following the circulation of the video.

The statement said operatives of the Maitama Division subsequently conducted coordinated raids across identified criminal flashpoints, leading to the arrest of 70 suspects.

It added that 30 of those arrested were released after preliminary screening and due process, while 40 suspects were retained in custody for further investigation.

The Command said the victim of the alleged robbery was subsequently brought in during the investigation and “positively identified two (2) of the suspects as persons he recognised from the incident.”

According to the statement, the two identified suspects, alongside the other persons retained in custody, remain under investigation as police intensify efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged robbery.

The Command said investigations had also been expanded to identify and apprehend any other persons who may have been connected to the incident.

The FCT Police urged residents to remain security-conscious and report suspicious persons, movements or activities to the nearest police station.
