A woman in Kenya has delivered five babies through normal vaginal delivery in what has been described as one of only a handful of such cases recorded in the country.
According to TNT Afrika, Mercy Kanini, from Juja in Kiambu County, delivered the quintuplets at Thika Level Five Hospital, despite the medical risks usually associated with vaginal delivery of five babies.
Quintuplets are commonly delivered through Caesarean section because of the risks to both the mother and babies.
Speaking at the hospital after the delivery, Kanini said she gave birth to the first baby shortly after arriving at the facility, before medical staff began preparing her for a Caesarean section.

She said the plan later changed after she was examined and doctors determined that she could deliver the remaining babies normally.
“After some time, I don’t know what happened, they said I could deliver normally. I was very happy on learning that I had delivered five babies,” she said.
Kanini said she was not frightened during the delivery, attributing her confidence to the care she received from the medical team.
“I was not afraid, the way I have been attended to has made me happy,” she said.
She also commended the doctors, nurses and Kiambu County authorities for the care provided to her and the newborns.
“My babies were put in nurseries and attended to well,” she said.
The delivery marks Kanini’s third childbirth. She previously had a son and a daughter.
Quintuplet pregnancies are considered extremely rare, particularly when conceived naturally, and the babies are often born prematurely with low birth weights, requiring specialised medical care.
A recent case was reported in Ethiopia in May 2026, when 35-year-old Bedriya Adem delivered four boys and a girl at Hiwot Fana Specialised Hospital in Harari Regional State.
The babies, who weighed between 1.3kg and 1.4kg, were delivered through Caesarean section and were reported to be in good health.
The hospital’s medical director, Dr Mohammed Nur Abdulahi, told the BBC at the time that Adem had conceived naturally without in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
Kanini did not disclose whether her quintuplets were conceived naturally or through IVF.
Her husband, Evans Nyamhanga, described the birth as a miracle, saying he had initially expected four babies.
“I was expecting four babies but God has been a God of miracles, we have got five,” he said.
However, Nyamhanga said the family was also concerned about the financial demands of raising five newborns.
“I wish to appeal to Governor Wamatangi to stand with me although he has already provided me with an ambulance, and to anyone else willing to stand with me I will be thankful,” he said.
