Dutch tennis player Botic van de Zandschulp has reached the US Open quarter-finals for the second time in his career.

The 30-year-old fought back from two sets down to defeat France’s Arthur Gea in a five-hour match.

Van de Zandschulp won 3-6, 6-7(0), 7-6(7), 7-6(3), 6-4.

Gea controlled the opening stages and won the first set after Van de Zandschulp failed to convert two break points at 3-3.

The Dutch player then built a 4-1 lead in the second set. He failed to hold the advantage and lost the tie-break without winning a point.

Van de Zandschulp came close to leaving the tournament in straight sets when Gea earned a match point during the third-set tie-break.

He saved the point and went on to take the set.

Van de Zandschulp also won the fourth set through a tie-break, forcing the match into a deciding fifth set.

He secured the crucial break at 3-3 in the final set and completed the comeback after five hours and 13 minutes.

The match became the fourth-longest contest in US Open history.

Van de Zandschulp received a warning during the match after hitting a ball out of the stadium in frustration. He regained his composure and wore down his French opponent.

Gea entered the main draw as a lucky loser after Casper Ruud withdrew with a back injury. He was attempting to become the first lucky loser to reach a men’s Grand Slam singles quarter-final.

Van de Zandschulp previously reached the US Open quarter-finals in 2021. Daniil Medvedev ended his run that year before winning the title.

The Dutchman will face top seed Alexander Zverev for a place in the semi-finals.

Zverev defeated Italian player Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(3) in the fourth round.
