“Rules keep things in order, but empathy keeps us human” — Woman shares how daycare manager helped her

A daycare manager has shared a touching account of how she waived a $90 late pick-up fee for a young mother who arrived 45 minutes late after being forced to stay at work.

The mother arrived at the daycare at about 6:45 PM wearing hospital scrubs and carrying her toddler. She appeared exhausted and broke down in tears while apologising for the delay.

The daycare’s rule required parents to pick up their children by 6:00 PM, with a $2 charge for every minute of lateness. The woman’s bill therefore came to $90.

Manager chooses compassion over the penalty

According to the daycare manager, the woman explained that severe understaffing at the hospital had forced her to remain at work during the shift change.

Despite accepting the fee, the young mother reportedly pleaded with the manager not to remove her child from the daycare programme.

Moved by her condition, the manager decided to cancel the entire $90 charge. She then went to the kitchen and packed three leftover plates of baked ziti for the mother to take home.

The manager said, “According to the system, you got here at 5:59,” before adding, “Take this home so you don’t have to cook tonight.”

Story highlights importance of empathy

The story has drawn attention to the balance between enforcing rules and showing compassion when people face difficult circumstances.

The manager concluded the account with a message that captured the lesson behind her decision: “Rules keep things in order, but empathy keeps us human.”

The incident highlights how a simple act of kindness can make a difficult day easier for someone struggling with work and family responsibilities.
