A frustrated father is pushing back against the Ghana Education Service after his son, who he insists has no hearing impairment, was placed at Akuapem School for the Deaf following this year’s school placement exercise.
“My son is not deaf. He can hear and speak. So why was he placed in a school for the deaf?” the father questioned, expressing disbelief at how the mix-up could have occurred in the first place.
For him, the placement raises serious concerns not just about his son’s education, but about the accuracy of the systems used to assign students to schools suited to their needs.
Determined to have the error corrected, the father says he visited the GES office to seek clarity and request a transfer to a mainstream school.
He was reportedly informed that resolving the issue would require going through a formal protocol process, a response he found frustrating given what he considers a fairly straightforward administrative mistake affecting his son’s academic future.
The case highlights a recurring concern raised by parents and guardians each placement season, questions around how effectively the Computerised School Selection and Placement System accounts for students’ specific needs, and how quickly errors, once identified, can actually be resolved through official channels.
