Secret Videos, Viral Claims Put Bauchi Senator Under Fresh Scrutiny

Viral videos, whistleblower allegations and a senator’s denial have sparked debate over evidence, armed networks and political accountability in Nigeria.

(Bauchi) – A series of viral videos and allegations from media influencer Hassan Fulani have placed Senator Shehu Buba Umar of Bauchi South at the centre of a national conversation about politics, security and accountability.

The controversy grew after Hassan alleged in interviews that Senator Buba had links with armed gangs, secret recordings, weapons logistics and a reported plot against the whistleblower.

TruthNigeria examined the public materials, previous reports and responses from those involved. The claims have generated widespread attention, but key questions remain over what can be independently verified.

Senator Shehu Buba has denied wrongdoing, describing the allegations and viral videos as false and part of a campaign to damage his reputation.

How The Online Storm Began

The controversy began after videos linked to Hassan Fulani and D English Alhaji spread online. Hassan said he gathered information on alleged links between political actors and bandit-terrorists, highlighting Nigeria’s challenge of balancing fast-moving security claims with careful verification.

The Hassan Fulani Recordings 

Hassan alleges he secretly recorded conversations involving people linked to armed groups, claiming the videos show individuals receiving support and logistics at a location connected to Senator Buba. Questions remain over identities, timing, location and authenticity.

Security experts say those questions require answers. A video may offer leads, but identities, locations and intent need further evidence.

The Senator’s Response

Senator Buba denied the allegations, saying viral videos do not prove links to criminal groups and some materials were taken out of context.

He said he first met Hassan Husseini in 2024 as an orphan needing educational support. Buba said he assisted him but declined a later business request.

The Niger Republic Allegation

Hassan’s claims also involve Abdullahi Ori, whom he described as connected to Senator Buba. He alleges Ori tried to locate him, later admitting involvement in a plot that requires confirmation through official records.

In a viral social media broadcast interview with Halima Abdullahi, wife of Abdullahi Ori, she made an appeal for government intervention.

“I am begging the government to compel Senator Shehu Buba Umar to immediately bring back my husband in good health.”

Experts Ask for Confirmation

Dr. Kabir Adamu said allegations involving political figures and armed groups require careful analysis. Videos and testimonies may start investigations but need verification.

“Security agencies must establish facts through verification, corroboration and analysis”, Adamu said.

Adamu added that, “investigators must distinguish between contact, dialogue and operational support, adding that armed groups survive through networks. They depend on money, intelligence, logistics and safe routes.”

Photos And Old Meetings Renew Debate

The controversy revived attention on older videos and photographs involving Senator Buba. A widely shared image claims to show him with Kachalla Yahaya Mani, a suspected bandit leader linked to Zamfara, requiring verification.

A resurfaced video shows Senator Buba with Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a widely known negotiator with kidnapping kingpins. The meetings sparked debate, with critics warning of legitimization and supporters defending efforts to release hostages.

Military Expert Explains Armed Networks

Security agencies must examine financing, intelligence, transportation and recruitment networks, said 

Colonel Bukar Hamisu (rtd.), former Brigade Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade, to TruthNigeria.

Hamisu added that investigations must focus on facts surrounding any alleged relationship: “A meeting or photograph may raise questions, but investigators must establish the circumstances behind it.”

Communities Want Answers

“We do not want politicians arguing online. We want anyone supporting those attacking our communities investigated,” BilialUmar, a resident of Toro County, Bauchi State, told TruthNigeria.

The concern among communities is whether security institutions can identify anyone supporting violent groups, regardless of political influence.

Social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, in a viral social media video has also called for investigation.

The Bigger Security Question

The Hassan Fulani controversy highlights a wider challenge facing Nigeria.

For security analysts, the central issue is whether institutions can investigate serious allegations involving powerful individuals with independence and transparency.

“Public trust depends on knowing that nobody is above accountability and nobody is condemned without proof”, Kabir Adamusaid went on to say.

As Nigeria continues confronting armed violence, the test is whether security institutions can follow evidence wherever it leads, expose the networks sustaining violence and provide answers communities can trust.
