Lady recounts how ₦15m betting winner ended up working as a fuel attendant

A woman has recounted how her friend went from winning ₦15 million through betting to becoming broke and resuming work as a fuel attendant after losing his remaining money on bets.
According to the woman, her friend won the ₦15 million last year and immediately married his girlfriend, who was pregnant at the time.
After their marriage, the couple moved into a three-bedroom flat costing ₦2.2 million annually. He reportedly paid three years’ rent upfront, spending ₦6.6 million on accommodation.
He also gave his wife ₦2 million to purchase baby items and personal belongings before using the remaining funds to run the household while continuing to bet.
How the betting losses began
The woman said the situation took a turn last month when one of the man’s friends sent him what was described as a “very sure” betting code that could supposedly produce a ₦20 million cashout.
She said he withdrew the ₦500,000 left in his account and staked it on the code, but lost the entire amount.
The woman added that he borrowed another ₦200,000 to try another betting code but lost again, leaving him completely broke.
He reportedly approached his landlord and requested a refund for one year of the rent he had paid upfront.
However, the landlord allegedly brought out their three-year tenancy agreement, which stated that the rent was non-refundable.
From ₦15m winner to fuel attendant
The woman said her friend has now returned to work, resuming as a fuel attendant at a filling station.
His experience has sparked discussion about the risks of staking large sums of money after a major betting win, particularly when winnings are repeatedly reinvested in gambling.
The story also highlights how quickly a substantial financial windfall can disappear when there is no sustainable financial plan for managing it.
