FCT Police Rescue Two Abandoned Babies, Seek Help To Identify Families

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rescued two babies abandoned in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja and appealed to members of the public to help identify their mothers and other family members.

The Command disclosed this in a statement on Friday, September 04, by its Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, saying the babies were rescued after residents alerted the police to their abandonment.

According to the statement, the first incident occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at about 5:30pm around Obodo Street, Kurudu, when a resident identified as Mr Innocent heard the cry of a baby.

“Upon inspection, he discovered a baby carefully wrapped in a cloth and abandoned in a carton box,” the statement said.

Following the report, police officers from the Kurudu Division, alongside personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care (JWC) Department, were dispatched to the scene and rescued the baby boy.

The police said the child was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and was found to be in stable condition.

“The baby was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and is currently in a stable condition,” the Command said.

It added that efforts were being intensified to determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.

“The Command has concluded all necessary documentations and handed over the baby to the Social Welfare Department for further care,” the statement said.

In a separate incident later that night, a resident of Gwagwalada, identified as Mr Ibrahim, heard a baby crying outside his gate at about 9:40pm.

The statement said Ibrahim, upon checking, discovered a baby who appeared to have been abandoned at the premises.

“Mr. Ibrahim, alongside other concerned members of the community, immediately rescued the child and reported the matter at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15 PM,” the police said.

The baby girl was subsequently taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital by personnel of the JWC Department for medical examination.

According to the Command, the child is currently receiving medical care pending her handover to the Social Welfare Department for further care.

The police said investigations were ongoing to “unravel the circumstances surrounding the abandonment” of the two children.

The FCT Police Command commended the residents who intervened in both cases, particularly Innocent, Ibrahim and other members of the community, for rescuing the babies and promptly alerting the authorities.

The Command urged members of the public who may have information about the identities of the babies’ mothers or relatives to come forward.

“The Command therefore calls on members of the public with any information that may assist in identifying the mothers or other family members of the abandoned babies to come forward and volunteer such information to the nearest Police Station,” the statement said.
