Gallery unveils collector series with new exhibition

Quintessence Gallery is set to launch its new Collector Studies series with an exhibition featuring works by Nigerian artist Alimi from the private collection of Prof Ebun Clark.
Titled “A Collector’s Eye: Prof. Ebun Clark x Alimi,” the exhibition will open on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 5 pm at Quintessence Gallery, Victoria Island, Lagos.
According to the organisers, the new series seeks to examine the contributions of collectors to Nigeria’s cultural ecosystem and explore what private collections can reveal about artistic practice and cultural memory over time.
The inaugural exhibition brings together works by Alimi that have been collected by Clark over the years, providing an opportunity to examine the artist’s work through the sustained attention of a single collector.
The organisers noted that while considerable attention is often given to artists, less focus is placed on the collectors who acquire their works, live with them and help preserve aspects of cultural history.
The exhibition will explore the question: “What can a private collection reveal about an artist over time?”
The works on display will not be available for sale.
As part of the opening programme, Clark will participate in a brief conversation about her relationship with Alimi’s work, including the first pieces she acquired, what drew her to the artist’s works over the years and what she now sees when the pieces are viewed together.
The Oluwani Creative Arts Foundation will also be acknowledged in connection with Clark’s collection and cultural activities.
Quintessence said Collector Studies forms part of its broader interest in the people, relationships, archives and institutions that contribute to the preservation of culture across generations.
The exhibition is scheduled to run as part of Quintessence’s ongoing efforts to create conversations around art, collecting and cultural preservation.
