A 65-year-old farmer and his sick wife were allegedly beaten with wooden sticks by their two sons following a dispute over a piece of land in Pune district, India.

Police said the incident happened at around 6pm on August 30, when Tukaram Kisan Raut and his wife, Anjana Raut, were taking a walk in their village.

Their sons, Sanjay Raut and Rajendra Raut, allegedly followed the elderly couple in a car.

According to police, the brothers verbally abused their parents and threatened to kill them if they refused to cancel the sale of the land.

The land reportedly belonged to their mother and had been sold to help pay for her medical treatment.

The situation allegedly became violent when the two sons attacked their parents with wooden sticks.

An FIR filed at Indapur police station stated:

“They started asking Tukaram, ‘Why did you sell the land ?’ They then assaulted Tukaram and Anjana with wooden sticks. Tukaram sustained injuries to his back, face, thighs and left shoulder, while Anjana was allegedly struck on her right wrist and waist,”

During the alleged attack, the brothers reportedly demanded that their parents take back possession of the land.

According to the complaint, one of the sons threatened:

“Take back the land you have sold, otherwise we will show you what we are capable of,”

People passing through the area reportedly gathered at the scene and alerted the police.

Officers later arrived and took Tukaram and Anjana to Indapur sub-district hospital for treatment.

A video recorded by people in the area showing the alleged attack was later shared on social media.

Tukaram reportedly told police that his two sons live separately with their families in Malwadi No 2, Indapur.

Police have since booked the two brothers for offences including voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons, criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.
