A video showing Catholic priest Rev. Fr. Paul Obayi, popularly known as Fr. Okunerere, personally dismantling a traditional shrine has surfaced online, with the well-known Nsukka-based cleric seen breaking bottles and tearing apart items at the site with his bare hands.

According to accounts of similar past interventions, Fr. Okunerere was invited by community youths and elders to remove the shrine as part of what they described as ushering in “a new dawn” for the area, reflecting a role he has become widely known for.

The priest, who leads the Okunerere Adoration Ministry in Nsukka, Enugu State, has built a reputation over the years for personally helping individuals and communities break away from traditional shrines and ancestral spiritual covenants, often documenting the process on camera.

Fr. Okunerere’s approach to what he describes as spiritual liberation has made him one of Nigeria’s most talked-about Catholic clerics, drawing both strong support from those who credit him with providing accessible deliverance ministry, and criticism from voices within the church who argue such interventions deserve stricter oversight given how publicly they play out.
