VeryDarkMan celebrates as court strikes out Police’s case against him

Social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has reacted after a court struck out the criminal case filed against him over allegations of impersonating a Nigerian police officer.

Speaking in a viral video following the court’s decision, VDM said he had been discharged because prosecutors failed to provide evidence that he impersonated a police officer or unlawfully wore a Nigerian police uniform.

VDM insists he never claimed to be a police officer

According to him, the case lacked merit because he never told anyone he was a serving officer of the Nigerian Police Force.

“I’ve been struck out and I’ve been discharged. There is no evidence against me that I wore the Nigerian police uniform and they charged me for impersonation. And of course I didn’t impersonate because I never told anybody that I am a Nigerian police officer.”

VDM argued that his appearance alone made it clear he was not presenting himself as a police officer.

“Policemen don’t wear earrings or put on nose rings or carry this hairstyle. So there is no possible way that I am a police officer.”

He also explained that his earlier reference to himself as “CSP” did not mean Chief Superintendent of Police.

“I said I was a CSP and a CSP means Chief Social Media Person. It has nothing to do with the police.”

Says ‘online police’ title was symbolic

The activist further maintained that his use of the phrase “online police” was symbolic and unrelated to the Nigerian Police Force.

He jokingly claimed that he had now been promoted from “CSP” to “IG of social media,” adding that his version of “IG” had a different meaning from that used by the police.

Speaks on outfit at the centre of the case

Addressing claims that he wore a police uniform, VDM insisted the outfit in question was simply a black designer outfit and not an official police uniform.

“I did not wear a uniform. I was putting on a black and black cloth with design.”

He added that he bought the material from a roadside vendor in Maraba, whom he described as a Nubian man, saying he never believed it was connected to the police.

Thanks court and legal team

VDM expressed appreciation to the Nigerian justice system and his legal team for securing the outcome.

“I want to thank the justice system of this country for this very sweet case because obviously they have no evidence against me. So I’ve been discharged.”

He also thanked his lawyers for representing him throughout the proceedings.

Questions basis of impersonation allegation

The social media personality questioned why he was accused of impersonation, arguing that he was never seen on the streets pretending to be a police officer or exercising police powers.

“Did you see me with police uniform on the road telling people that I’m a policeman? There’s nothing like that.”

He maintained that in the video cited by the prosecution, he clearly described himself as the “CSP of the online division,” insisting the remark was humorous and not an attempt to deceive the public.
