A team of fully armed military officers has reportedly raided an illegal mining site believed to be linked to the operations of businessman and New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure, Chairman Wontumi.
According to reports circulating online, the officers stormed the site in a helicopter as part of efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, which has been blamed for widespread destruction of Ghana’s water bodies and farmlands.
Videos from the operation show armed security personnel moving into the area, with claims that several rounds were fired during the confrontation with illegal miners who were allegedly operating at the site.
The development has sparked reactions on social media, with some users questioning how mining activities allegedly continued despite reports that Chairman Wontumi is currently in prison.
“Chairman Wontumi is in prison but his people are still working,” some social media users claimed while reacting to the footage.
However, the ownership of the mining site, the identity of the miners involved, and details surrounding the military operation have not been independently verified.
The government and security agencies have in recent years intensified operations against illegal mining, deploying security forces to affected areas to stop activities that contribute to environmental degradation.
