The United Kingdom has issued a fresh travel advisory warning its citizens against travelling to several states over security concerns.

The updated guidance, released by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on Thursday, places a number of states under varying levels of travel restrictions, ranging from a complete travel ban to recommendations for essential travel only.

Under the strictest category, the UK advised against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina and Zamfara States.

The warning also applies to the riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.

According to the FCDO, the riverine areas refer to river and swamp locations that are accessible by boat but not by road.

The British government also advised its citizens to undertake only essential travel to several other states, including Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara, Benue, Abia, Anambra and Imo.

The advisory further covers the non-riverine parts of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers States, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja.

The FCDO urged travellers to carefully review its guidance before making travel plans to Nigeria, stressing that no destination can be guaranteed completely safe.

It also advised British nationals to obtain adequate travel insurance that covers their destinations, planned activities and potential emergency expenses.

According to the UK government, travelling to locations against official FCDO advice could invalidate travel insurance coverage.

The updated advisory additionally provides information on entry requirements, health risks, security concerns, regional threats and support available to British nationals in Nigeria.

It also includes guidance on issues such as fertility treatment scams and overseas adoption.
