Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election as Governor of Osun State, describing the outcome as a victory for democracy.

Obi, in a post on his official X account on Sunday, also congratulated the people of Osun State, saying they had “spoken with courage and clarity” and reaffirmed their power to choose their leaders.

He said Adeleke had earned a fresh mandate through his commitment to the people, compassion for their needs and achievements in office.

“I warmly congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election and the good people of Osun State on this important democratic victory,” Obi said.

He particularly commended youths in the state for what he described as their peaceful defence of their democratic mandate.

“I particularly commend the courageous youths of Osun who rose to the occasion and peacefully defended their democratic mandate,” he said.

According to Obi, the outcome of the election demonstrated the importance of citizens protecting their votes and participating actively in the democratic process.

“The lesson from Osun is clear: democracy is strongest when citizens are alert, conscious of their civic responsibility, and determined to ensure that their votes count,” he said.

Obi also used the occasion to urge Nigerians to prepare for the 2027 general elections by remaining informed, participating actively and protecting their votes.

“This is also a clarion call as we approach 2027. Nigerians must remain informed, participate actively, vote, and protect their votes,” he said.

He urged political actors to put the interests of Nigerians above partisan considerations and embrace peace, unity and the rule of law.

“Elections should never be battles of violence, but contests of ideas, competence, character, and service,” Obi said.

He expressed hope that the Osun election would strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process and inspire citizens to work towards building a “just, secure, prosperous, and truly people-centred nation.”

TVC News earlier reported that Returning Officer, Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole declared Adeleke winner of the election with 511,067 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.

ADC candidate polled 17,180 votes.

Adeleke therefore won by a margin of 66,252 votes over Oyebamiji.
