Idaiye Emerges As New Speaker In Edo

A new speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly emerged on Monday, August 17, following the resignation of the former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku.

In the aftermath of Agbebaku’s resignation, Yekini Idaiye was elected as the new speaker of the assembly.

In his inaugural speech, Idaiye announced that Agbebaku has been suspended over allegations of corruption and misappropriation of funds.

He said the former speaker would be subjected to further investigation to thoroughly examine the allegations against him, hence the decision to suspend him pending the outcome of the investigation.

The new speaker also announced the suspension of other principal officers of the House, including the majority leader, deputy majority leader, and Mmnority leader, who served under the former speaker.

The newly elected House leadership is made up of Sunday Ojezele, representing Esan South-East Constituency (Majority Leader); Eugene Inegbeboh, representing Igueben Constituency (Deputy Majority Leader) and Natasha Osawaru, representing Egor Constituency (Minority Leader).

The sitting was thereafter adjourned until Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
