An elderly woman has been caught reportedly stealing fabrics from market women at Barekese Zongo in the Ashanti Region, after traders grew suspicious and decided to search her belongings.
According to those present, a search of her bag uncovered several stolen fabrics along with unrelated items, including house keys and a screwdriver, raising questions about the scope of her activities beyond the market itself.
“She steals fabrics,” one trader stated plainly, describing the pattern that had apparently gone unnoticed for some time before she was finally caught.
Rather than handing her over to police, traders opted to caution her directly, warning her never to return to the market, after she reportedly pleaded for forgiveness.
The incident reflects a familiar, informal approach to handling suspected theft in many Ghanaian markets, where traders often resolve such matters internally through public confrontation and warnings rather than formal legal action.
Barekese, located in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region, is home to a community market that, like many similar trading centres across Ghana, remains a frequent site of theft complaints from vendors selling textiles and other goods.
