Former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has paid tribute to Nigeria’s historic 1996 Olympic football team on the 30th anniversary of its gold medal triumph, describing the squad as the greatest in the country’s football history.
Sani made the remarks in a post shared on his verified X handle on Monday, August 3 as Nigerians marked three decades since the Dream Team defeated Argentina to win Africa’s first-ever Olympic football gold medal.
Reflecting on the achievement, the former lawmaker said the feat remains unmatched in Nigerian football and urged the current generation of Super Eagles players to emulate the legacy of the Olympic champions.

“Today marks the 30th anniversary of Nigeria’s Olympic Football Gold victory. That remains the best team in Nigeria’s football history. We remain proud of that generation.”
He also challenged the present Super Eagles squad, largely made up of younger players, to rebuild the country’s football reputation.
“I hope the GenZs Super Eagles will strive to build on that legacy. The Nigerian Super Eagles is now a shadow of its past.”
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Super Eagles also joined in commemorating the milestone on their official X handle, sharing photographs from the historic campaign with the caption:
“On This Day in 1996.”
The images revisited memorable moments from Nigeria’s remarkable run at the Atlanta Olympic Games, where the Dream Team stunned world football by defeating Brazil in the semi-finals before overcoming Argentina 3-2 in the final to claim the gold medal.
