A Nigerian man has recounted how a street tout he regularly gave money to allegedly saved him from being attacked by a group of men targeting people at night.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the man said he went out to buy suya and was returning home after 10pm when he decided to take a shortcut.

According to him, on reaching a particular spot, he saw two girls and a man who had been forced to kneel down.

“Na yesterday I know say nobody dey useless for this life. You see all those agberos, those guys wey you think say them dirty for street, them go dey ask you say, ‘Bros, abeg, find me something.’ Try make you dey give them oo,” he said.

The man said the group surrounded him with harmful objects, while one man came out from the bush, pointed a torch at his face and appeared ready to attack him. However, the man recognised him as someone he regularly helped.

The tout reportedly told his colleagues that he knew the man, after which they allowed him to pass. He then asked the tout to escort him home and explain what was happening.

“He said, ‘Omo, na wetin men take dey survive be that oo. Those people wey dey there, na their phone and money dem wan just collect.’ I said, ‘Eeh, imagine if I wasn’t doing good to them. They would have ambushed me too and collected my phone,’” he added.

His story has generated reactions online, with many saying kindness can return in unexpected ways, while others urged caution around dangerous situations.

He concluded by encouraging people not to look down on anyone, noting that those they help today may help them tomorrow.
