NiMet Forecasts Three Days of Rain, Thunderstorms Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast three days of cloudy weather, thunderstorms and varying levels of rainfall across several parts of Nigeria from Wednesday, August 5, to Friday, August 7.

In its latest weather outlook released in Abuja on Wednesday, the agency said residents in the northern, North-Central and southern regions should prepare for widespread rainfall, with some areas likely to experience moderate to heavy thunderstorms.

NiMet also warned that strong winds could accompany thunderstorms in several locations and advised Nigerians to take precautionary measures to protect lives and property.

Northern States to Experience Widespread Storms

According to the agency, Wednesday morning will begin with partly cloudy skies across the northern region. However, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa states.

As the day progresses, the weather system is expected to spread to Kaduna State and other parts of the North-East.

The agency added that by the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall would extend to most parts of the northern region.

On Friday, early morning thunderstorms with rainfall are expected in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Taraba states before spreading across the entire northern region later in the day.

North-Central Region to Record Frequent Rainfall

NiMet also forecast cloudy weather across the North-Central zone on Wednesday, with early morning thunderstorms and light rainfall expected in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau and Nasarawa states.

Later in the day, residents of Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau and the FCT are expected to experience moderate rainfall and thunderstorms.

The agency said the region would continue to witness widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall throughout Thursday.

On Friday, light rainfall is expected in parts of Nasarawa and Benue during the morning, while moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast for most parts of the region later in the day.

Southern States Also Expected to Receive Rainfall

For the southern region, NiMet predicted generally cloudy skies on Wednesday morning, with light rainfall expected across parts of the South-South.

By afternoon and evening, moderate rainfall is expected in Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, as well as states in the South-East and South-South.

On Thursday, moderate rainfall is forecast for parts of Ondo State and the South-South during the day, with more rainfall expected across the South-East and South-South later in the day.

Friday’s outlook indicates light morning rainfall in parts of the South-South, followed by moderate rainfall in Ondo, Oyo, Enugu, Imo and other areas across the South-East and South-South.

NiMet Issues Safety Advisory

The meteorological agency cautioned that strong winds could precede rainfall in areas expected to experience thunderstorms.

NiMet advised residents to properly secure loose objects that could be blown away by high winds to prevent accidents and property damage.

The agency also urged motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall due to poor visibility and slippery roads. It further recommended unplugging electrical appliances during thunderstorms and staying away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injuries from falling branches or uprooted trees.

In addition, NiMet advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather information from the agency to support safe flight planning and operations.

The agency encouraged Nigerians to monitor its regular weather updates and follow safety guidelines throughout the forecast period.
